Wow. So much has happened in the last month or so, but obviously I'm very far behind on keeping you up on it. Here's some highlights!

Kansas City Burlesque Fest (10 hours of travel each direction to judge one show!)
Almost being sold into prostitution in Paris! (Exageration? Peut etre...but ask me about it in person!)
Performing in Scotland! (Brrrr! So chilly!)
London! (Inspiring! Exhausting! Inspiring!)
Show Me Burlesque Fest (AKA: The day I decided those big ass red Strawberry shoes are retired.)
Gigs! Gigs! Gigs!

I've pretty much not stopped moving since I got home from the three week whirlwind that started the month of May. To say I'm exhausted is an oversimplification. There's a certain something that has crept up out of the blue and is begging me to find balance in my life, something I promised myself at the beginning of 2012, and really haven't even thought about since.

But, next week's trip to Vegas marks the end of my "work" travel scheduled so far, and I'm packing away my burlesque suitcases til next year (barring corporate & fully-paid gigs). I've got a theory that's brewing in the back of my mind, and this year's traveling shennanigans have proven to be the perfecting testing ground.

Now, I sit and wait a little bit.

My theory is that traveling for burlesque fests is something that one should do for pleasure, but does not (typically) allow for enough business networking or financial opportunities to justify the expense (assuming a strictly business approach). I think there's an unspoken idea that if you get out to enough festivals (especially if you win contests), people will know you on the national level and the work inquiries will appear - but I theorize that that's (sadly) not true. I theorize that the majority of an (burlesque) performer's income/work and box-office power comes from local opportunities and promotion and that getting the opportunity to perform in a festival (even if we have to pay to get there) makes us feel good about ourselves and allows us to meet and befriend people who are like us, but does not the bacon bring home.

It's not that earth-shattering of an idea, actually - but I think it's important to actually put the idea into words. Some newer performers (myself, at one time, even) think it's the ticket to making burlesque your major source of income or simply just getting accolades that will put you on the burlesque "map," but from those vantage points, I think we are largely missing the boat.

That said, I love to travel, and I'll look forward to 2013, when I'm a lot more selective about the festivals I apply to and/or travel to be part of. If it's going to be for enjoyment, the festival is gonna have to bring it!

Looking forward to tonight's show at Exit, featuring the one & only Jacqueline Hyde!
Hope to see you there!

I agree with you, totally.

From my point, I'z dont got the dollars to hit the festies so its a real easy choice not to travel.
Luckily, I have one in my backyard so I at least get one a year.
Also luckily, my city is finally starting to hire us!!

Thanks you all you share with us, your intellect, experiences, and prose.

Holy frickin' traveling Batman! LOL I wanna hear the Paris story tho. Booooo to having to ask you about it in person. :(

Anyway, I've got a friend coming up to Chicago in June and she's looking to maybe do a performance or two while she's up there. Her name is Kassy Luvjoy & she's from San Antonio. Do you think Vaudezilla might have anything going on at the end of June that she could participate in?
