The first book I read this week is "Poke the Box" which is essentially an essay about starting things and how you need people on your team who are willing to initiate, even if they are just doing experiments. All the rhetoric about business success and motivational jibber jab doesn't do much if there isn't someone who's willing to take the ball and run with it. Someone who's willing to "go!"

What drew me to this book is that the description simply said, "If you're stuck at the starting line, you don't need more time or permission. You don’t need to wait for a boss’s okay or to be told to push the button; you just need to poke."

I'm someone who pokes. I poke all the time - I am constantly experimenting with sets of circumstances, approaches, and ideas. I express myself on facebook, twitter, and livejournal, even when I'm not totally sure where a post is "going" or what the results might be. I am an Information Gatherer. A lot of the things I know about life are based on doing something and then figuring out what I did.

I'm not afraid to make mistakes, and this was a great book that reminded me that avoiding failure is impossible if you're someone who wants success.

A simple read - I loaned the book to another Initiator on our team, in hopes that it will also confirm what she seems to inherently know and give her permission to make mistakes, too. We are lucky to have people who will start things in our group, and I hope people embrace their roles! :)
